Experience & Methodology Behind Real Time Risk

More Than Individual Experience

Real Time Risk is not a sole practitioner consultancy built around individual experience alone. It is a structured safety and risk advisory business deliberately designed to operate at governance, systems and operational interface level for complex and high consequence organisations.
While founded by Greg Rae, Real Time Risk was developed to support environments where leadership decisions, system integrity and risk verification directly influence outcomes. The business integrates operational experience, academic study and proprietary risk frameworks to deliver advice that is defensible, scalable and applicable across multiple industries.

Why Real Time Risk Exists

Real Time Risk was established in response to a recurring failure seen across major projects and high risk operations.

In 2015, while supporting a large LNG construction program in Western Australia, a consistent pattern became clear. Safety and risk systems were often technically compliant but operationally fragile. Controls were documented, but not always verified against real site conditions. Governance intent existed, yet delivery pressure frequently eroded critical barriers at the workforce level.

The issue was not a lack of standards, procedures, or rules. It was the disconnect between leadership systems and how work was actually planned, supervised, and executed.

Real Time Risk was created to close that gap. To design and assure systems that remain effective under real operating conditions, commercial pressure, and complex contractor interfaces.

That origin continues to shape how Real Time Risk operates today.

Workplace Health and Safety Consulting Australia

Founder Context and Operational Foundations

Greg Rae Founder and Principal Consultant

Real Time Risk was founded by Greg Rae, a senior health safety and risk professional with more than three decades of experience across offshore oil and gas, marine construction, heavy civil infrastructure, utilities and defence aligned environments.
Greg’s background is grounded in operational delivery. His experience has been shaped by direct involvement in live worksites, complex SIMOPS environments and high consequence activities where failures carry serious outcomes.
This operational grounding underpins every framework, review and advisory engagement delivered by Real Time Risk.

Industry Engagement and Exposure

Real Time Risk has provided consulting, advisory and specialist support across a broad range of sectors including energy, marine construction, defence infrastructure, utilities, franchised operations and specialised field services.
Engagements have included governance advisory, risk system development, tender support, project assurance and specialist field risk oversight. Scope and responsibilities varied by engagement.
References to industry exposure represent capability and experience and do not imply endorsement or ongoing contractual relationships.

Governance Focused Systems Not Template Consulting

A key differentiator of Real Time Risk is its focus on the integrity of risk systems rather than surface level compliance.

This includes:

  • Alignment between work as planned and work as performed
  • Verification of critical risk controls
  • Management of interface risk including contractors, SIMOPS and delivery pressure
  • Leadership accountability for residual risk acceptance
  • Identification of communication breakdowns and barrier degradation
  • Understanding drift from planned risk to actual risk state

These principles are embedded into all advisory work and system designs.

Proprietary Risk Models and Methodology

Real Time Risk has developed its own risk profiling and system models informed by postgraduate study and applied experience across high risk projects.

These models address:

  • Risk transfer and barrier integrity
  • Warning signal identification and escalation
  • Incident precursor and failure pathway analysis
  • The transition from planned residual risk to actual risk exposure

The models presented on this page represent the intellectual foundation of the Real Time Risk methodology. They are working tools applied in consulting, governance reviews and assurance activities, and continue to evolve through operational feedback and academic rigor.

Built for Higher End Clients

Real Time Risk was deliberately structured to support organisations requiring more than basic compliance documentation.

This includes:

  • Executive and board level risk assurance
  • Defence and infrastructure tender support
  • Project HSSE management systems
  • Contractor governance frameworks
  • Independent risk reviews and gap analysis

The advisory model allows independence from delivery pressure while maintaining strong operational relevance.

Digital WHS Solutions for Small and Medium Business

Alongside governance advisory services, Real Time Risk also delivers structured Digital WHS solutions for small and medium businesses.

This stream exists to meet a clear market need. Many organisations require practical, compliant systems but do not require governance level consulting.

Digital WHS solutions include:

  • WHS management system templates
  • Practical procedures and registers
  • Risk and compliance tools aligned to legislation
  • Scalable systems that mature with the business

This ensures organisations at different stages of maturity can be supported without compromising consulting standards.

One Methodology Across All Services

Regardless of client size or service type, the principle remains consistent.
If a system does not reflect how work is actually performed, it will fail under pressure.
Real Time Risk exists to prevent that failure.
